  • clASS DESCRIPTIONS:

In the above captioned schedule, you will notice graphics off to the side of the classes- these are there to help you find an appropriate class that you can really enjoy. The flame indicates that the class is heated (to about 90 degrees. The "one elephant classes" are great for beginners, a 2 elephant  gig will be a good challenge, and if you see 3 elephants.... well...hold onto your tusks, because you're in for an intense and wonderful ride!!

ASHTANGA FULL PIMARY/YOGA CHIKITSA: The first of the six series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga is a dynamic, vigorous, and physically challenging style of yoga with roots that date back over three thousand years. This method of yoga hails from an Ancient text called the Yoga Korunta authored by Vamana Rishi and subsequently interpreted by Pattabhi Jois. This beautiful, flowing system of yoga consists of classical yoga postures woven together with Ujjayi Breathing, Bandhas  (energetic locks in the body) and Drishti (gazing points). One of the Unique signatures of an Ashtanga Yoga practice is the breath synchronized movement: each and every movement in an Ashtanga practice is tied to either an inhale or an exhale. In Pattabhi Jois' treatise (Yoga Mala) on Ashtanga Yoga, the Primary Series is described as Yoga Chikitsa or Yoga therapy which promotes stretching, strengthening of the body and cultivates stamina and detoxification of the body and re-aligning of the spine. Since this  method of Sadhanayoga follows a precise sequence of postures linked together in a specific and never-changing order, the practicioner's focus is always inward. Once the student has learned the sequence, the entire practice is a moving meditation.

ASHTANGA MODIFIED:

A modified version of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Some of the postures may be modified or omitted altogether and typically, this will be a half vinyasa class. There will be a "feature" asana each week in our modified sessions and in the beginning of class we'll go over form, the correct breath count and options for safely entering, exiting and abiding in the pose. Modifications or alternatives for postures will be presented as the practitioner builds their Ashtanga Yoga practice.

.

VINYASA FLOW or flow yoga

Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a form born of  Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga that employs the vinyasa technique of "connecting postures," but does not use the six series of postures specific to the Ashtanga Yoga system, as outlined by Shri  K. Pattabhi Jois. While an ashtanga practice provides  the same postures in the same order each time, a vinyasa fow class will be different each time you step onto your mat. Satori's flow classes are invigorating adventures in breath and movement that provide both a dynamic flow and pools of soulful stillness. Classes titled Vinyasa Flow are NOT heated.

 LONG HOT LUNCH  (coming soon!)

Just like it sounds- this is an hour and a half heated mind/body vinyasa flow  adventure that will invite you to practice exciting, physically demanding and challenging sequences and variations.  This class is for students who are at ease and at home in inversions and backbends. Come, sweat and enjoy the dance between courage and caution that this class inspires!

HOT & Slow Satori Flow

A heated Fusion Flow class that draws from many time honored paths of yoga. These classes are a challenging opportunity to cultivate strength, endurance and grace as the practice flows from one posture to the next. Our Hot & Slow Satori Flow classes are set to great music, thoughtfully sequenced and mindfully taught. The practice will not rocket so quickly from pose to pose that practitioners lack the time to be mindful of their form. This class is a mind/body/spirit adventure in breath and sweat- hold onto your bandhas!!!! You're in for a great ride! ***heated to no more than 95 degrees.

 HATHA:

The best way to describe this class is: Yummy Yoga! This class is the softer side of Satori. Our Hatha sessions are soothing, nurturing meditative classes that are perfect for the novice yogi or the experienced practitioner looking for a restorative treat.  This is an EXCELLENT class for beginners.  In our Hatha classes, you will get re-acquainted with your body and be guided through a  gentle practice in which the instructor will introduce you to the fundamentals of yoga at pace that allows you to focus on form and teach you how to delight in your body and your breath! Come and enjoy this serenity sensation!

YIN YOGA

This is a quietly powerful practice of the Tao Yin floor postures of Taoist Yoga. The postures are practiced in silence and  stillness and this beautiful form promotes growth, clearing of energetic blockages, and enhances circulation. As opposed to the other more dynamic forms of yoga which stretch Yang tissue (Muscle), a Yin Yoga class targets stretching of tendons, ligaments and fascia within the body. Each posture is taken for prolonged periods of time (sometimes up to 3-5 minutes) to encourage the slow and safe opening of these connective tissues. This leaves the practitioner with an overall feeling of lightness, spaciousness and peace. Our Yin Yoga classes are steeped in the wisdom of the Tao. They are the perfect antidote to stress and a marvelous counter-balance to more active styles of yoga.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR :  You willl need a yoga mat and perhaps a towel and some water for drinking after your practice. As far as attire is concerned, wear comfy clothing. A snug fitting top is advisable for inverted postures. We practice in bare feet, so swap your shoes for an open mind and a sense of adventure and come discover the wonder of yoga!
